Microsoft Plans Nuclear Powered Data Centers

Microsoft is putting extensive effort into decarbonizing the electricity sector to achieve global targets by nuclear powered data centers.

The company has high ambitions of using nuclear power for its data center because of its affordability and modularity, potentially making them more affordable than large-scale fission reactors. Microsoft also signed a power purchase agreement with Helion Energy to build the world’s first operational nuclear fusion power plant.

To achieve the ambitious targets, Microsoft hired a director of nuclear technologies, Archie Manoharan. She has over 15 years of experience in the energy industry championing various first-of-a-kind emerging advanced nuclear technologies through complicated regulatory landscapes and successfully executing complex global decarbonization projects.
